Mobile Data Systems Releases CLIC2C™ Visual Search Application
for Apple iPhone

2D barcode and digital watermark decoder is first of its kind for iPhone platform

April 8, 2009

Nesconset, NY Mobile Data Systems, Inc. (MDS), a leading provider of mobile barcode technology, today announced the availability of its free CLIC2C universal visual search application for the tremendously popular Apple iPhone.  Downloadable from the iPhone App Store, the CLIC2C application is the first to be able to decode both 2D barcode symbologies, in addition to digital watermarks.  It is also the first barcode scanning application to use streaming video capture on the iPhone – accelerating the speed of decode and therefore improving the interactive consumer experience.

Interactive mobile marketing is beginning to gain traction in the United States as brands look for new ways to build relationships with consumers, and the use of 2D barcodes is seen as a way to “shortcut” the link between printed advertisements and web-based content.  Using industry standard 2D barcodes, such as QR codes, brands enable consumers to automatically make the link from the printed page to the internet using camera in their cell phone as a barcode decoder.  “Offering CLIC2C on the iPhone enables brands to reach a wide, rapidly growing consumer base that is tech-savvy, and ready for interactive mobile ad campaigns” explains Joseph Spiteri, Founder and CEO of Mobile Data Systems, Inc.  “The typical iPhone user is already familiar with the experiences interactive mobile campaigns offer: web-based commerce, mobile media downloads, and anytime, anywhere information access.  The iPhone is a great platform for consumers and brands alike, and is expected accelerate the use of mobile marketing campaigns.”

Using the CLIC2C application on a cell phone, consumers can interact with barcoded or digitally watermarked “traditional” print media in response to advertisements, to obtain information, download media or even interact with each other using personal barcodes (available for free at www.personalcodes.com) where consumers can barcode-link their own content such as social networking sites, photo sharing portals and more.

As the interactive mobile marketing industry evolves, digital watermarks are expected to replace 2D barcodes as the decode technology of choice by brands – driven by visual benefits of digital watermarks (they’re imperceptible to the unaided eye).  The CLIC2C application is ready for that transition, as the only visual search application that can decode both technologies (barcode and digital watermark) today.

“With interactive mobile marketing on the brink of mainstream, the user experience is a critical success factor for consumer adoption”, states Spiteri.  “Similar to our other supported cell phone platforms, our iPhone implementation of CLIC2C uses streaming video to decode the barcode or digital watermark embedded in a print.  This is a first of its kind on the iPhone, and dramatically speeds up the decode process for the iPhone user.”  Until CLIC2C, iPhone-based barcode reading applications required users to take a still picture of a barcode, wait for the application to decode the picture, and then process the link to web-based content.  The user would not know if a decode was successful for several seconds, and if unsuccessful, would have to restart the process from scratch.  Using streaming video decoding, the CLIC2C application automatically searched for and decodes a valid barcode or watermark when present, significantly reducing the time between when a consumer decides to interact with printed content and the time when they reach that desired web-based content.

CLIC2C for the iPhone can be downloaded from the iPhone App Store (search for CLIC2C-US).  For other cell phone platforms, including Android, Windows® Mobile and more, the CLIC2C application can be downloaded from www.clic2c.com or by texting APP to CLIC2C (25422) from their cellular phone.
